Alvesco is available as a brand-name drug that helps patients prevent asthma symptoms. This FDA-approved aerosol inhaler belongs to corticosteroids, making breathing easier for asthma patients. The medication should be used regularly for effective results, but if you are not seeing any improvements or the condition worsens, get medical help immediately.

Product Overview

Alvesco is a prescription medication widely used to manage and control asthma symptoms. It contains ciclesonide, a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation in the airways, making breathing easier. FDA-approved, Alvesco is used as a long-term maintenance inhaler to prevent asthma attacks and improve lung function.

It is available as an inhalation aerosol in strengths of 80 mcg and 160 mcg and is typically prescribed to adults and children aged 12 and older. The usual dosage of Alvesco is one or two inhalations per day, as directed by a healthcare provider. Alvesco works by delivering ciclesonide directly to the lungs, which helps control and prevent asthma symptoms by reducing inflammation.

Common side effects of Alvesco include headache, nasal congestion, and throat irritation. To minimize side effects, rinse your mouth after each use. Precautions include informing your doctor of any existing conditions, especially infections or weakened immune systems. In case of an overdose, get immediate medical attention. Store Alvesco at room temperature and keep the inhaler clean and dry.

How to Take Alvesco?

  • Before taking your medication, make sure that you have read the patient information leaflet carefully.
  • Follow the dosage recommendations as provided by your medical practitioner.
  • Before using your inhaler for the first time, remember to prime the device by spraying 3 puffs of the medication into the air. You must also prime your divide if it has not been used for over 10 days.
  • If you are unsure how to prime the inhaler, ask your healthcare provider for detailed instructions.
  • After priming, remove the mouthpiece cover and breathe out as much as possible, but do not force the breathing.
  • Place the mouthpiece into your mouth and close the lips around it. Breathe slowly and deeply.
  • While breathing, press the canister downwards with your finger.
  • Once you have finished inhaling, hold your breath for at least 10 seconds to let the medication reach your lungs.
  • The inhaler comes with a spacer device that you can use if it is difficult to use.
  • If your dosage is two puffs, then wait for a minute before the second puff.
  • Gargle and rinse your mouth with water to avoid conditions like dry mouth, hoarseness, and oral yeast infections.
  • Spit the water after every use.
  • Clean your mouthpiece one time each week with a clean and dry cloth/tissue.
  • Avoid wetting the tissue.

Missed Dose

If someone has missed a dose of Alvesco, they should take the missed dose as soon as possible or whenever they remember. However, if it is almost time for a new dose, they can skip the missed dose and continue with their regular dosing schedule. Patients can also use medication apps to avoid skipping the medication.

[Note: Do not take two doses of Alvesco simultaneously to compensate for a missed dose. This can increase your risk of experiencing side effects.]

Overdose

An overdose of Alvesco is not supposed to cause life-threatening problems, but the use of high steroids for prolonged periods can lead to specific symptoms, like

  • Bruising
  • Skin thinning
  • Body fat on the face, neck, back, or waist
  • Excessive acne and facial hair
  • Menstrual problems
  • Loss of interest in sex

In such situations, visit the nearest clinic or talk to your healthcare provider.

[Note: If you notice you have taken too much medication, call your local emergency number immediately.]

How Does Alvesco Work?

Inflammation plays a crucial role in asthma. When you have such a condition, the inner lining of your airways swells and produces mucus. As a result, swollen airways become more sensitive to asthma triggers, which can lead to asthma attacks. Alvesco works by reducing this inflammation inside the airways. It directly targets the swelling, making breathing easier.
